Multimedia with Words (1986-1991)

These pieces integrated symbolic and object-based representations, suggesting they could be considered two sides of the same coin (e.g., in an analogous manner to how particles can be considered as both waves and objects). In one case (i.e., “bulletin board”), text from bulletin boards in club bathrooms is juxtaposed with a sex scene, and my old graffiti tag. The head in this tag used to change from site to site in my graffiti; in this piece, the eyes are closed while the head faces the sex scene as a reference to American inhibitions about sexuality. In other works, words relating to the unfinished representation of flowers are written over the under-painting for the flowers – a nod to quote from Paul Valéry: “a poem is never finished, only abandoned”.
